Nagorno Karabakh – Elephant in the room
For all these time, what nonsense did allow the existence of Nogorno-Karabakh as a separate territory within Azerbaijan? Armenia is hesitantly claiming legal rights to it but still Nogorno-Karabakh’s territory is not within Armenia. And no state recognises Nogorno-Karabakh as a state. Why?
One thing that UK Guardian reader really needs is well-disciplined and concerted attention to its writings. Editorial taste of Guardian’s writers make an understanding of some of its article neck-breaking subtle, even cumbersome sometimes. I felt the same about English language, at the beginning of my academic studies in English. Only a sweaty jog brought the energy level back for next day. I felt the same way about some of Guardian’s articles about Nagorno Karabakh too.
Simply put Nogorno-Karabakh located within Sothern Caucases and Sothern Caucases is a buffer zone from Russia, Turkey and Iran. If you into crisis management or security analysis get the main actors right. Let me simplify the geography of conflict as follows. Caucasus is the geographical area, which separate Eastern Europe from West Asia. North Caucases undisputedly belong to Russia. So, our story starts with South Caucasus. And the Northern borderline of South Caucaus is shared with Russia. From South Turkey and Iran lies. From West and East, Black Sea and Caspian Sea lie accordingly. Simply put, geographically and naturally speaking, this Sothern Caucases works as natural buffer zone for these three big former empires.
That changed when Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Triumphant war victors ventured into Southern Caucases and favoured Georgians and Armenians self-determination projects. What these victors have all in common is religion, Christianity. Yes, religion. Oh yes.
Majority Armenian population is Christians, about 92% of them, and majority of Nogorno Karabakh population is considered as Armenians and also Christians. On the other hand, majority Azerbaijan population is Muslims, about 97% of them. If you want to make it more spicy. Majority Muslim population of Azerbaijan is Shia Muslims. The latter supposed to clears about the level of influence possible in Azerbaijan by Iran and Turkey accordingly.
None of the three factors needed to be fulfilled by a territory to become a state have not been met by Nogorno-Karabakh, hence it is not recognised by United Nations either. But Armenians hesitantly try to assert that Nogorno-Karabakh as part of its territory. But it is not. Nogorno-Karabakh is a land-lock state surrounded by Azerbaijan. It is like Republic of Ireland is claiming London is part of Ireland. Or France is clamming Stuttgart is part of its territory. Or Germany is claiming French city Bourges is its territory. Can you imagine Canada claims Iowa State as Canada’s territory?
It is the Christian Graze of European nations had entertained the existence of Nogorno-Karabakh as a separate territory. Effect of Covid-19 and economic downturns in European nations are felt in their military might and understood by adversaries very well. So the biggest elephant in the room is the really cunning and Grace of Christian-European-nations towards Armenians and Nogorno-Karabakh population. Turkey, Russia and Iran are accused in meddling in Nogorno-Karabakh’ and Amenia’s affairs. You got to know why.
